The card is issued when you open a basic uk bank account such as a Bank of Scotland Easycash, Co-op Cashminder or Halifax Easycash account. These accounts are usually given to students, people on a low income or someone with no/poor credit history.

The first thing you'll notice when you try to use your card to buy stuff online is that a lot of shops dont accept it. You wont be able to use Visa Electron at most of the big name stores such as John Lewis, M&S, Tesco and Woolworths. However, all is not lost, a growing number of shops are now starting to accept the electron card online.

Verified by Visa
A growing number of shops are now using Verified by Visa as added security. This requires you to enter a password and personal assurance message at the checkout. You have to sign up for the service with the bank that issues your card, you only need to do this once.

Prepaid Maestro

Pay as you go prepaid Maestro Cards are great if you dont want to get in debt. You can get a prepaid card if you have a bad credit rating as no bank account or credit check is required.

Bread
To issue a card Bread will need your passport number or UK driving licence number, and a delivery address for the card. If applying by post, please include a recent utility bill or bank statement.

It's ideal if you are a foreign national residing or working in the UK and can't get a bank account in the UK, just provide your passport number and current address.

You must be a resident of the UK and over 18 years old.

Any UK resident over the age of 13 can apply for a card.

Splash Plastic
Any UK resident over the age of 13 can apply for a card.

The Aspinall Maestro Card
You need to be over 18 years old to apply, although cards are available to people 13 years old and over, as long as the card application has been completed by a parent or legal guardian over the age of 18.
